On June 1, 2020, CARF International (CARF) and the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) launched the ASAM Level of Care Certification nationwide. Initially, the ASAM Level of Care Certification will cover adult residential addiction treatment programs at Levels 3.1, 3.5, and 3.7 of the ASAM Criteria. Providers of residential addiction treatment services may submit applications for the ASAM Level of Care Certification to CARF here.
As a reminder, pursuant to California Health & Safety Code § 11834.015, the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) is required to adopt the ASAM treatment criteria, or an equivalent evidence-based standard, as the minimum standard of care for licensed residential addiction treatment facilities. DHCS will issue provider bulletins or similar instructions prior to the adoption of regulations by January 1, 2023. Licensed residential addiction treatment facilities may want to apply for the ASAM Level of Care Certification now so that they are confident that they will be able to meet DHCS’ standards once adopted.
If you have questions about the ASAM Level of Care Certification or DHCS’ requirements for residential addiction treatment facilities you should contact Kathryn Edgerton (kedgerton@nelsonhardiman.com) and the Nelson Hardiman team for additional information.
